Break into Surrey's Accountancy Market

Graduates looking for their first big break in Accountancy could do well to consider a Training opportunity in a Surrey-based accountancy practice as a great starting point for a super career.

Close to London, Surrey has its own thriving towns and commercial hot spots. Places like Guildford, Epsom, Redhill, Croydon, Kingston all have a number of independent accountancy firms, as well as regional offices as part of the Top 50, Top 20 and Top 10. Surrey towns also have strong transport links, excellent amenities, not to mention high-quality accommodation and thriving economic communities.

So how can you join one of the rapidly-growing accountancy communities based in what is arguably England’s most attractive home county? Here are some suggestions to get started as a trainee accountant.

Understanding the work involved.

Companies like to meet candidates who can show that they have gained a good Degree at University and also understand what the professional Accountancy qualifications can offer – whether that is via the ICAEW or ACCA. It is always a great idea to do some extensive research into what the training programmes involve. Also, do some networking to find out what it really is like to work in a firm of accountants. Get a good insight into a “typical day in the life of a Practice Accountant…”

Showcase your skills.

Make yourself stand out from the crowd. Highlight and discuss the most relevant skills on your CV. In addition, the ability to work in a team, good communication skills, strong IT skills and the ability to network is hugely important. Even your university experiences outside of the Tutor halls can make a huge difference in making your profile come alive – so yes talk through Sporting achievements and interesting hobbies or charity work.
