In these uncertain times, employers’ core values have never been more in the spotlight. It has been particularly interesting to observe the power of the public’s response when those corporate values and principles are exposed – from the very best to the very worst cases.

At the beginning of 2020 we began to work on updating our branding and engaged a marketing company to create an improved Fletcher George website.  A key part of this process has been to really question what drives us forward as a business. Interestingly, it has proved to be our unwavering core values – the importance of building strong relationships with honesty and professionalism – that have guided us through the recent storm, reinforcing our firm belief in them.

Identifying and communicating core values is something we actively encourage our clients to do when recruiting. The best candidates make decisions based on so much more than salary, placing equal importance on an employer’s culture, values and vision. The closer the values of the employer match those of the candidate, the greater the chances of a successful and long-lasting recruitment outcome.

Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of those core values and beliefs in a way that nobody ever expected.

Candidates want to know what a potential employer stands for, their reputation, integrity and whether their working environment engenders a sense of purpose and belonging. We know that senior finance candidates are looking for a strategic career move rather than just ‘getting a job’ and want to nurture long-term relationships and connections. They are seeking an environment in which they can thrive, not just survive.

Identifying and communicating that clear sense of what your company stands for goes so much deeper than mere window dressing. ‘Fruit Fridays’ and suchlike may be fun, but corporate values are about much more than that. They are about being authentic, accountable and transparent. A clear and consistent message needs to be communicated across every platform, including job adverts, website, social media, and face-to-face encounters.  Existing employees play a vital role as ambassadors in this process too.

At Fletcher George, we take great pride in taking the time to understand fully what drives both our highly experienced professional candidates as well as our clients.  As we navigate the ‘new normal’, the ability to expertly match career aspirations, skills and values with exactly the right kind of opportunities will be critical to recovery.
